Dog Training Tips
Essential training techniques for a well-behaved and happy companion
Sit
Foundation command. Hold treat above nose, move it back over their head. Say "sit" as their bottom touches ground. Reward immediately.
Stay
Start with dog in sit position. Hold palm out, say "stay," take one step back. Return and reward. Gradually increase distance and duration.
Come
Practice in secure area. Get down to their level, say "come" enthusiastically. Reward generously when they reach you. Never call to punish.
Leave It
Place treat in closed fist. When dog stops trying to get it, say "leave it" and reward with different treat. Critical for safety.
Build a strong bond through reward-based training methods.
Timing is Everything
Reward within 3 seconds of desired behavior for best association.
High-Value Rewards
Use special treats for new or challenging behaviors.
Consistency
All family members should use same commands and rules.
Short Sessions
5-10 minute sessions multiple times daily work best.
Leash Pulling
Stop moving when leash tightens. Only proceed when leash is loose. Reward walking nicely beside you.
Jumping on People
Turn away and ignore jumping. Only give attention when all four paws are on ground. Teach alternative greeting like "sit."
Excessive Barking
Identify triggers. Teach "quiet" command. Provide mental stimulation and exercise to reduce boredom barking.
Resource Guarding
Trade for higher value items. Practice "drop it" command. Never forcefully take items. Consult professional if severe.
